Why You Will Love This Homemade Strawberry Sauce
We went strawberry picking this summer and picked over 10 lbs of fresh strawberries! This sauce was the perfect way to use up the strawberries and create a freezer friendly option that can be used year round, even when strawberries are no longer in season.

It comes together in under 30 minutes and can be made with fresh or frozen berries. Using ripe and fresh berries optimizes the sweetness and is so delicious! However, you can use frozen strawberries in a pinch but I would recommend using this Roasted Strawberry recipe, as the roasting enhances and adds depth to the strawberry flavor.
Spoon it over pancakes, stir it into yogurt, drizzle it on ice cream, or use it as a filling for cakes and desserts. It’s also freezer-friendly, so you can make a big batch now and enjoy a taste of strawberry season anytime.
Strawberry Sauce Ingredients
You only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this versatile sauce:
- Strawberries – Fresh is great when in season, but frozen works well!
- Maple syrup – Adds a naturally sweet touch without refined sugar. You can also use honey or granulated sugar if you prefer.
- Lemon juice – A squeeze of lemon brightens up the sauce and balances the sweetness. Adding lemon zest is also delicious.

How to Make Strawberry Sauce
This strawberry sauce couldn’t be easier to make:
- Prep the berries: Wash the strawberries and remove the stems. No need to slice them—they’ll break down as they cook.
- Mash & cook: Add the whole strawberries, maple syrup, and a squeeze of lemon juice to a medium saucepan. Use a potato masher to break them up slightly. (Prefer a smoother texture? You can also pulse them in a blender or food processor first.) No Need to strain out the seeds, unless you want a really smooth consistency.
- Simmer: Cook over medium-low heat for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and turns a deep red color.
- Cool: Let the sauce cool completely. It will continue to thicken as it cools. For an extra boost of thickness (and nutrition), stir in 1–2 tablespoons of chia seeds while it’s still warm.

Ways to Use Strawberry Sauce
This sauce is so versatile! Here are some of my favorite ways to enjoy it:
- Swirled into yogurt or oatmeal
- Poured over pancakes, waffles, or French toast
- As a topping for cheesecake, pound cake, or ice cream
- Layered into chia pudding or overnight oats (like my Strawberry Chia Seed Pudding)
- Spooned into smoothies or milkshakes
- As a filling for cupcakes or sandwich cookies
- Mixed into lemonade, cocktails, or mocktails
- Add to Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream Bars
- In between layers of Ice Cream Cookie Cake- Try this Patriotic Version!
- As a jam on biscuits, PB&J Sandwiches, or toast
The options are endless!
Make-Ahead & Storage Tips
- Fridge: Store cooled strawberry sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
- Freezer: This sauce freezes beautifully! Let it cool completely, then pour into freezer-safe mold or silicone trays. Thaw in the fridge overnight and give it a stir before using.
Recipe Variations
Blend it smooth if you prefer a seedless, pourable sauce.
Add chia seeds to turn this into a quick strawberry jam.
Stir in vanilla or cinnamon for a fun flavor twist.
