What is Compote?
Compote is so versatile and can be made with any fruit. It is effortless to make and doesn’t even require a recipe. Compote is essentially fruit combined with acid like lemon or vinegar or any flavorings such as sugar or vanilla. Combined with heat, these staple pantry ingredients turn into a delicious fruit spread! Best served warm as a topping for anything from pancakes and french toast to ice cream or yogurt. Or spread on a slice of rustic sourdough toast!

How to Make Blueberry Lemon Compote
Blueberry compote really is effortless to make. Combine the fruit in a saucepan with lemon, lemon zest and a bit of water and sugar. If you want a more tangy, sour compote then add additional lemon. This recipe is less sweet and more tangy.
If you prefer a more sweet compote, add 1 extra tablespoon of sugar. Allow to simmer on the stove for anywhere from 20-30 minutes. When the fruit looks glossy and is slightly thicken, its done. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
Store in an airtight container such as a mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
How to Make Healthy Blueberry Compote
The process of cooking the fruit will naturally sweeten the compote. This recipe is intended to be lower in sugar compared to other compote recipes. Swap granulated sugar for unrefined sugar such as agave, honey or maple syrup.


Blueberry Lemon Compote
Ingredients
- 2 cups frozen or fresh blueberries
- 3 tablespoons agave, honey, or maple syrup
- 3 tablespoons water
- Juice and Zest of a lemon
Instructions
- Combine blueberries, sugar, water, lemon juice and zest in a saucepan and cook on medium-low to medium heat for 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes. Mixture will slightly bubble, stir occasionally. When the fruit is to your desired sweetness and is glossy, its done. Compote will thicken as it cools.
